some sweet movies
As Valentine's Day approaches, I find myself recoiling at the thought of corporate-mandated reassurances of affection and thinking about some of the sweeter, more genuine love stories I've seen. So, in the spirit of sharing the love, I thought I'd pass these along for those who haven't seen them. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.
Once actually reminded me a lot of The Girl in the Cafe. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but they have a very similar feel or quality. The Girl in the Cafe is essentially about an older man who works as an economist for the British government. He meets a much younger woman in a cafe (hence the title) and invites her to a WTO summit he has to attend for work. What happens between them is touching and beautiful. I absolutely loved this movie.
Amelie is one of my all-time favorite movies. I cannot say enough good things about it. I own very few movies and this is one of them. While most people think of this movie as chronicling her adventures, there is a very tender love story at the heart of it. Amelie creates connection with everyone around her and, eventually establishes a romantic connection for herself. If you have not seen it, you absolutely must.
I think my favorite parts of the movie are the hide-and-seek game she ends up playing with Nico and then their first meeting in person, though all of it is fantastic.
Well, I hope this provided some not-so-standard options for the upcoming "holiday."* Enjoy.
*Note: I am not bitter about Valentine's Day per se, rather I dislike the consumer pressure placed on people. You must show someone you love them and you must do it in very circumscribed ways: a purchased card, purchased flowers, purchased chocolates, dinner out, diamonds, etc. I believe love should be celebrated every day and in a way that meshes with the people involved. If you want to celebrate Valentine's Day, great, but don't let commercials dictate your expectations, create your own vision instead. *puts soapbox away*

Usually I'm totally anti Vday and where really depressive looking clothes on that day. Now I want to watch 10 sweet movies...
I believe love should be celebrated every day and in a way that meshes with the people involved.
Amen. That has been mine and my hubby's view on V-day. I hate the crass commercialism of it all. I have always said exactly as you....that love should be celebrated every day. I don't need a holiday to remind me to say I love you. Jeesh!
I haven't seen any of the movies you suggest so I thinkI will have to check them out. I would recommend some of my favs....but I think we have different tastes. Vs the one you have here....I think you would find mine a bit cliche and a tad fromagio.
I love this movie!!!!
"create your own vision instead"
Always, and in all ways.
Although, if Boyfriend bought me a box of chocs on The Day, it would not be a wasted gesture.
No one I know has seen 'The Girl in the Cafe' and I thought it was beautiful. I love the way they conveyed the sheer loneliness of Bill Nighy's character. It was so subtle and yet passionate.
Plus, I dearly love Once, and also am a proud owner of the soundtrack.
And Amelie...well...that is one of my all time favorite movies.
I have just been inducted into 'Flight of the Chonchords' so I had just decided to watch the Eagle/shark movie. With your recommendation, I'm really looking forward to it.
The other movie I always put on a list of these kinds of movies. 'Truly, Madly, Deeply" with Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson.
Amelie is also one of my favorite movies of all time.
Its amazing that you know people who cannot see it as a love story - that comes across as one of the central parts of the movie. I also think the movie is an anthem/inspiration for all shy people out there. Whenever I meet someone who is shy, I want to just sit them down and have them watch this movie.
I love the game that she plays with him too. If a girl ever did something like that for me, she would score Uber Kudos.
But I am also really partial to how the movie describes each character in terms of their idiosyncratic likes and dislikes. I *love* that. I wish people in real life came equipped with captions like that. :)
I also *really* love Harold and Maude. Its one of my all time favorites as well!
I try to show that movie to as many people as possible.
